Surrounded by family, friends, and faculty three varsity football players, William Clement, Thomas Dillon, and Mavin Saunders, announced their signings to play NCAA Division I football next year at New Mexico State, Wake Forest, and Florida State University, respectively.

Linebacker William Clement signed to New Mexico State University.
Will has recorded over 100 tackles in his last two seasons as a Falcon.
Clement will be joined by 14 other Texas recruits who also signed with the Aggies.

Cornerback Thomas Dillon joins the Deacons of Wake Forest.
He has 16 career interceptions and numerous accolades, including First Team All-SPC in both football and track.
Dillon will be playing for first year head coach Dave Clawson and is scheduled to face Kinkaid teammate Saunders on October 4th in Tallahassee.

Tight end Mavin Saunders signed his NLI with current National Champion, Florida State University.
While at Kinkaid, Saunders has received All-South Zone (2013) and First Team All-SPC (2014) honors.
The Seminoles' first game will bring Saunders back to Texas when they take on OSU at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington on August 30th.

The Kinkaid community looks forward to watching these young men succeed at the next level.

Middle School Debate Hastings Tournament Update: Octofinals, Quarterfinals, & Top Speaking Results

The Kinkaid Middle School debate team recently competed at the Hastings tournament this past Saturday.  For nearly all of Kinkaid’s 7th graders, this was only their second time to ever compete.

Kinkaid’s 7th graders were competing in public forum debate with partners.  They were discussing whether or not the Supreme Court made the correct decision last year on the Voting Rights Act, a rather complex and difficult topic.  Kinkaid Debate Coach Stacy Thomas was very proud of the students’ research for this debate.

At the competition, all students debated 3 preliminary rounds and then the top 16 partnerships advanced to the octofinals based on their record and points awarded for presentation.  Kinkaid had half of the teams that advanced!

Making the octofinals (top 16) were the following debate partnerships:

CG Marinelli/Callie Rosenthal

Rohan Kumar/Jack Neblett

Daniel Mirzai/Mason Nome

Reeves Cameron/Brian Schroeder

Roya Moradi/Onuchi Ndee

Making the quarterfinals (top 8) were:

Dani Knobloch/Tate Toussaint

Mason Freeman/Andrew Yang

Madeline Karkowsky/Ellie Lucke

Two Kinkaid debate teams had winning 2-1 records but who missed the cut for advancing just barely based on speaking points.  These two were Jeffers Shaper/Becket Toussaint and Nolan D'Souza/Alexander Treistman.

Additionally, students were awarded individually for their speaking.  Out of the 80 students participating in this division, Kinkaid had two students honored for top speaking.  They were:

Callie Rosenthal in 3rd place and Mason Freeman in 4th place.

Finally, while most of Kinkaid’s 8th graders were unable to attend this tournament, Kinkaid did have a couple of students in the Lincoln-Douglas debate.  These students compete individually and were debating if developing countries should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction.

David Liang successfully reached the quarterfinals in this division.

Congratulations to all of Kinkaid middle school debaters for the hard work they have been doing throughout the month of January!

Kinkaid Middle School debaters recently competed at the Seven Lakes tournament.

They were competing at a high school level competition in the beginners division, so most of their opponents were freshmen and sophomores.

The partnership of Collin Lawrence and Sam Segal won the novice public forum debate division, placing first out of 37 teams from 14 schools.  They won their final round against Stratford High School in Spring Branch on a 3-0 decision from the judges.  They were debating the Voting Rights Act.

Kinkaid had three other teams that made the octofinals (top 16), meaning that Kinkaid had one quarter of the teams that advanced past the preliminary rounds.

These octofinal teams were:

Lauren Ho/Amanda Roff

Remy Kalai/Alexander Treistman

Anish Odhav/Minnhy Truong

In addition, Kinkaid had three students individually recognized in public forum for their speaking.  The following students place in the top 10 speakers out of 74 participants:

Sam Segal: 2nd place

Amanda Roff: 5th place

Remy Kalai: 7th place

Finally, Kinkaid also had a handful of students competing in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, an individual event that discussed the topic of environmental protection versus resource extraction in developing countries.

Austin Koort advanced into the octofinals and also earned the 1st place award for best speaking out of 56 students from 18 schools.

Congratulations to these middle school debaters!  These are great results for a competition at the high school level.
