Two Kinkaid Alums Named In Forbes Top 30 Under 30
Ruchit Nagar '11 and Hayden Lasher ’05 were named by Forbes as Top 30 Under 30 in Healthcare and Art & Style for 2016, respectively.
Ruchit is the Founder of Khushi Baby, a non-profit geared towards combining electronic medical records and wearable NFC technology.
The non-profit is currently conducting controlled trials of a wearable necklace that can be scanned by healthcare workers to pull up a child’s medical record. So far, the Khushi Baby system has been rolled out to 96 camps in northern India. Ultimately the organization aims to produce a complete platform to bridge the world’s vaccination gap.
Hayden launched her self-titled handbag company in 2014, designing uniquely styled leather bags accompanied by a signature bow.
Prior the company's launch, her professional experience with top brands like Micha
el Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta, prepared her for the tall task of managing her own brand.
Congratulations Ruchit and Hayden!
Girls Basketball Hosts Australian Teams
The girls varsity and JV basketball teams hosted the Penrith Basketball Association Panthers from Penrith, Australia, for some friendly competition and Falcon hospitality, January 4-6, 2016. The Falcon girls varsity team won their game 47-31, but the girls JV team was unable to contain the team from down under and lost 13-47. The visiting Panthers were hosted, or "billeted" as the Aussie's say, by Falcon team members, parents and coaches. While visiting Kinkaid, the Panther players got their first taste of Texas and Tex-Mex food.
According to Falcon player Nia Caldwell, "Spending time with the Australians was an eye-opening experience. Seeing how much our lives, houses and even word choices are different from theirs was really cool. Also, seeing some of the universal things we both love like 'One Direction' and 'Teen Wolf' created a sense of unity. I'm glad they got a chance to share their culture with us and vice versa."
One of the Australian players commented, "The weirdest thing about Texas is that everything is massive. The houses are so big and the portions of food are for three people. The Whataburger cups are the size of jugs/buckets." "My favorite city here that we've been to so far is Houston! The people are really nice and the food (fajitas) we had yesterday were really good," said another player.
The Falcons noted some of their favorite Australian words:
biscuit=scone
scone=biscuit
flip flops=thongs
bush=forest
Australia= pronounced 'estraya'
mom=mum
braid=platt
home stays=billets
The girls basketball teams enjoy breakfast in The Commons with the visiting Panthers from Australia.

Kinkaid Tennis Programs Taking on New Look
The Kinkaid US & MS tennis programs are taking on a new look for the 2015-2016 spring season. Stacey Marshall takes over as the new Tennis Program Head and will handle all administrative aspects for both the US & MS Programs. In addition, she will be the point of first contact for any parent questions.
Upper School Tennis
Respected teaching pros Ross Shaw and Michelle Burdick have been hired to lead the boys and girls US teams, respectively. The US teams will also be working with the Houston Racquet Club’s Juniors program for practices.
Ross Shaw grew up playing in Australia where he was a successful, highly-ranked Junior who went on to play at the national level. As a player, he competed throughout Europe on the ATP tour, earning a singles ranking. As a coach, Shaw is USTPA Professional Certified 1 and has worked as a teaching professional in Houston for 30 years. Shaw brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table and is looking forward to working with the Kinkaid team.
Michelle Burdick earned NJCAA All America honors at Odessa College before being graduated from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix where she was a member of the #2 ranked team in NCAA Division II. Burdick then embarked on a career as a tennis pro and for the next 13+ years she taught at several country clubs in Arizona and Texas. In 2008, Burdick began giving private lessons exclusively in the Houston area and continues to do so today. She too brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position and is anxious to begin working with the Kinkaid students.
Middle School Tennis
On the MS front, first year history teacher Mallory Meyer will be leading both the girls and boys teams. Meyer played four years of varsity tennis at Darien HS in Darien, Connecticut, serving as team captain her senior year. After high school, Meyer attended Wittenberg University where she played singles and doubles, serving as team captain her junior and senior years. During summers throughout college and during her first couple of years teaching, Meyer taught tennis and coached the junior teams at Knollwood Country Club in Lake Forest, IL. Meyer is enjoying her first year at Kinkaid and can’t wait to get started with the tennis season!
On board to assist Meyer is Debbie Hurwitz who stepped in last year to help coach the teams and Andrea Villasana, the teaching pro at The Forest Club where the MS teams will practice this year.
When asked about the new coaching staff, Athletics Director Bob Beeman said, “When I first learned Anne Buckingham was retiring to full-time parenting and Maya Zein took a job in the corporate world, I wondered what we’d do for coaches; now that it has all taken form, I must say that I’m excited and look forward to a strong year at all levels of the program.” Beeman went on further to say, “Stacey and Debbie give us experienced Kinkaid coaches that will undoubtedly help the new staff acclimate.
