Brandon Charnov Headed to Brown to Play Basketball

Senior Brandon Charnov has accepted an offer to play basketball at Brown University next year.

After suffering a devastating ACL injury during his junior year, Charnov dedicated himself to his “return to play” rehabilitation over the course of the next 9 months. Always in the forefront of his thinking was the goal of getting back on the court with his Kinkaid teammates, competing for an SPC championship, and securing an opportunity to play basketball at a reputable university. Charnov not only answered the bell at the start of his senior season, but was one of the cornerstones of a Kinkaid team that won 21 games and was ranked 16th among large private schools in Texas. Brandon’s play, leadership, and academic excellence helped him secure the offer to play at Brown.

Boys Basketball Program Head Larry Wilkins who had the pleasure of coaching Brandon during his senior year remarked, “I think Brandon will do very well at the next level. I know he will not be satisfied with just being a member of the team. I expect Brandon to work hard and make an impact for the Bears.”

When asked his impressions of Charnov, Athletics Director Bob Beeman said, “Brandon Charnov is what we talk about at Kinkaid when we reference 'student athlete'-an excellent student with an outstanding work ethic when competing in-season and training in the off-season. I remember when I first arrived at Kinkaid, the summer before Brandon’s freshman year. Brandon and I always seemed to end up in the weight room at the same time during the day. He never said much, just went about his business each and every day; not many have the drive and discipline to work alone like that each day! Brandon is a great teammate and a special young man. I look forward to following from afar what I know will be a successful career.”

Congratulations Brandon!

Rhett Cardwell to Play Football at Rice University

Senior Rhett Cardwell has accepted an offer from the Rice University Football staff to be a 'Preferred Walk-on' for the Owls this fall. Cardwell, a 3-year varsity starter for the Falcons, played in three SPC title games and was an integral contributor to the team’s two championships earned in his sophomore and senior seasons.

A two-way performer for the Falcons, Cardwell is expected to initially compete for reps on Special Teams while he settles into the nuances of playing defensive back at the collegiate level. When asked about Rhett, Kinkaid Football Program Head Nathan Larned said, ”Rhett is one of the most complete young men that I've ever coached. He exhibits great work ethic and he is charismatic, positive, athletic, intelligent, savvy, tough, and humble. His ability as a leader to reach every person he comes across is uncanny. If my two boys can come close to being the type of man that Rhett is, I will have done my job as a father”.

When asked to share his thoughts on Rhett, Athletics Director Bob Beeman said, “Rhett Cardwell helped elevate Kinkaid football to a consistent level of excellence. He is a special blend of fierce competitor that can perform at a high level, charismatic leader that makes those around him better, and fun-loving kid playing in the back yard with friends; a must-have individual for your team if you want to be successful.” When asked about Rhett’s ability to play at the next level Beeman predicted, “While I don’t know the extent of the talent in Rice’s 2016-17 recruiting class, I have no doubt that Rhett will represent himself and Kinkaid with honor and distinction. I look forward to watching Rhett compete on behalf of Rice University in the future, wishing all the time that he was still competing for Kinkaid!”

Cardwell is scheduled to report to Rice in early June to begin work on his degree as well as to begin training with the football team for the upcoming season.

Congratulations Rhett!

After a thorough national search, Cynthia Griffing has accepted the Athletics Department's offer to become Kinkaid's new Head Athletic Trainer. Ms. Griffing has over 20 years of experience as an athletic trainer at various public and private high schools throughout Texas. In addition, she served a three-year stint as an athletics director until she decided that the athletic training room was where she wanted to be and moved back in that direction.

Ms. Griffing comes with strong references from a number of individuals within the athletics and medical community. She has been described as someone with an excellent work ethic, operates with high integrity, is direct and honest, and “loves helping students through both the physical and emotional challenges associated with injury”.

When asked about the search process Athletics Director Bob Beeman said, “There was no shortage of outstanding candidates for this position. We held Skype interviews with several individuals and ended up bringing three very qualified candidates to campus, all of whom would have been an excellent choice for our position. I was most interested in hiring someone with many years of experience, who had a proven track record of running a professional operation, and who was noted for being direct, honest, and loved being with students. Ms. Griffing best fit all of those criteria in my mind.”

Ms. Griffing will assume her official duties on August 1, 2016, and will be collaborating with outgoing Head Athletic Trainer JJ Roton on the purchasing of supplies and set-up for next school year. Please welcome Ms. Griffing to the Kinkaid family!
