Tis the season of giving! The Class of 2020 put a twist on the annual poinsettia sale this holiday season. By supporting the class fundraiser, students were able to give over 170 poinsettias to the Memorial Villages Fire Department and Police Department as a token of their appreciation.

“The poinsettias certainly bring Christmas cheer to the fire station” says Fire Chief David Foster. “Lots of people forget that when they’re at home celebrating with their families that their firemen are always here. So it’s nice to have the school, the kids and parents of the school remember them.”

Poinsettias were delivered this week and accompanied by 9th grade representatives Annabell Skuvisz '20 and Claire Richey '20 to personally say thank you. Members of both departments will be sent home with one to enjoy with their families. Thank you Class of 2020 for the wonderful gesture!

MS Science Teacher Wins HMNS Excellence in Teaching Award

Each year The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents the Wilhelmina C. Robertson Excellence in Science or Mathematics Teaching Award to two teachers, one K-5th grade math or science teacher and one 6th-12th grade math or science teacher, in the Houston area who significantly impact students through exemplary science or mathematics teaching.

On November 9th at a special luncheon at the Briar Club, Kinkaid Science Department Chair and middle school science teacher Stephanie Toro was honored with the 2016 Award, along with Megan Murphy of the Rice School. The recipients and guests at the luncheon were treated to keynote speaker NASA astronaut Captain Scott Kelly.

Ms. Toro's teaching philosophy emphasizes the inclusion of Nature of Science in the classroom. "Often educators focus on the content and never bother to teach students what science is and is not, as well as how it works." She believes once students experience science as knowledge, that allows them to understand, explain, apply, and predict natural phenomenon observed in their surroundings and they realize they can be successful science students. She places a high level of importance on teaching the process and skills of science.

Congratulations to Ms. Toro!

Junior Caroline Hanan is one of 16 players nationwide named to the Harrow/NFHCA High School All-American First Team.

Varsity Coach and Field Hockey Program Head Jackie Ciconte had this to share, “Caroline is the only 1st team All American selectee to come out of the entire west region (California, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas combined) that has been documented in the past 13 years. Although Caroline more than deserves to be recognized for her commitment and talent, receiving an honor of this magnitude is extremely rare. It is a testament to her passion and limitless potential. I am absolutely ecstatic and very proud of her. This recognition represents the incredible community we are blessed to be a part of here at Kinkaid. The support given to all sports, male and female across the board is one of the many factors that set us apart and help put our student-athletes in the position to succeed. Caroline has left her mark in Kinkaid field hockey history and will continue to be an asset to our program as a senior this fall. It’s no surprise that Caroline has her goals set high, as she will be competing at the next level for Duke University following her successful career as a Falcon."
